It seems we are inundated, IMHO, with acronyms these days. I find comfort in relics like ASAP and RSVP, which were ancestors to the corded phone, now an ancient artifact itself. GSM is similar in that it predates our social media short-hand by a couple of decades but is just as confusing, nonetheless. I've given you a brief description, below, to spare you the awkwardness of Google-ing GSM under the table at a restaurant (which I may or may not have done) to figure out what in the world it is.
GSM = Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre - meaning, the wine is a blend of these three grapes. This trio is probably best known for its role in Châteauneuf-du-Pape but, dare I say, is nearly as popular in Australia and of course, a favorite of the Rhone Rangers.
Though each terroir has its own expression, the blend typically expresses spiced berry (thank you grenache!), subtle smoke & black pepper (I'm looking at you, syrah/shiraz) along with earthy flavors and a beautiful deep color (mourvèdre, please stand up). One unique characteristic of this happy threesome is its versatility. As Miss Fox says on our Mines & Wines tours, this type of blend can be a go-to when she is asked to select a wine (which is ummm, always) for the group at a restaurant or social gathering because it will pair well with anything from steak to chicken to portobello mushrooms. IDK about you, but I love the idea of an all-purpose, accessible wine for my next party or group dinner!
